Abstract

Introduction: Total knee replacement is becoming more common. The success of this surgery is based on the design of the implant as well as on the alignment and orientation of the components. There is a direct relationship of early failure and malalignment. Currently, using computer-assisted navigation could ensure better results and clarify the position of the components.

Methods: To determine the alignment and orientation of the components obtained after total knee replacement guided by computer navigation we designed a prospective cohort of 112 patients (123 knees) diagnosed with osteoarthritis who underwent a primary total knee replacement using computer assisted navigation. Every patient was evaluated clinically and radiologically.

Results: Preoperative functional scale (Knee Society score) was 26 points whether postoperative result was 90 points. An average of 2.8 degrees of valgus was found. Excellent and reproducible radiological results were found in all cases.

Discussion: The use of a computer assisted navigation system for primary total knee replacement is an effective tool in order to obtain a proper alignment and orientation of knee prosthesis components as well as in reducing the average varus/valgus deviation of the long anatomical leg axis.
