Revision surgery for failed anterior cruciate ligament reconstruction
Keywords:
Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction, Revision Surgery, Failure, Quad Tendon Autograft with Bone PlugAbstract
Introduction: ACL revision surgery it’s being considered a challenging procedure for the orthopaedic surgeon that requires an exhaustive pre-surgical assessment of the patient in order to determine failure etiology and risk factors to avoid failure reincidence. This procedure may be performed in a single or two stages. Several grafts had being proposed as well as fixation methods and surgical techniques.
Methods: We present a retrospective case series of eleven patients that underwent a one stage ACL revision surgery using ipsilateral Quad tendon autograft with bone plug. All patients were evaluated by using a functional scale as well as KT-1000.
Results: 9 patients were evaluated over a two year observation period of time. We found out excellent results in 44%, good results in 22.2%, moderate results in 22.2% and poor results in 11.2% of the patients.
Discussion: Using ipsilateral Quad tendon autograft with bone plug to perform a single stage ACL revision surgery is a safe, effective and predictable choice. Nevertheless, prospective cohorts should be made in order to get reliable and applicable recommendations on the basis of a long term follow up
