Background: Primary hip and knee replacement are routine procedures in specialized centers. The number of patients undergoing these procedures is elevated due to the high incidence of osteoarthritis. Knowing the characteristics of patients at local level is required.
Methods: Descriptive observational study conducted at Soma Clinic by recording outcomes of patients who underwent primary hip and knee replacement in 2010. Outcomes were evaluated after 18 months follow up.
Results: A total of 543 patients were identified, of whom 530 had a primary hip or knee replacement, and 13 of them were bilateral and simultaneous. The mean age was of 67.2 years (<60 years, 25.5%). The main indication for surgery was osteoarthritis. Almost all (98.5%) the patients had no complications before discharge. The frequency of revision surgery was 2.4%. Non-infectious causes for revision surgery were 1.7%, with 0.7% infectious. There was no revision surgery due to infection for the primary hip replacements.
Discussion: The frequency of complications is predictable and comparable to specialized centers wideworld. A long-term monitoring of patients undergoing joint replacements should be ensured, with emphasis on the younger population. Strategies should be prepared for a comprehensive approach to patients with complications should, especially for patients requiring revision surgery.
