Background: The purpose of the study was to describe the functional perception of patients undergoing anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction using a hamstring autograft technique at La Riviera Clinic of Bucaramanga, Colombia, from January 2014 to March 2015. The Lysholm scale was used to classify the subjective satisfaction as regards functional capacity.
Materials and methods: The study included 37 patients evaluated by reviewing the medical records and then applying the Lysholm scale by telephone call. These injuries were produced by work accidents. The information was collected on a paper form and then double entered onto a spreadsheet, and the analysis was performed using Stata 12.0 statistics package.
Results: Of the 37 patients evaluated, 86% were men, 56% were left side injuries, 68% had associated injuries, and the sense of instability disappeared in 43.2% of the patients. The outcome at 6 to 12 months was excellent in 24.3%, good in 37.8%, and fair and poor in 24.3%, and 13.5%, respectively. The vast majority (94.6%) returned to their pre-injury activities.
Discussion: The Lysholm scale has been validated to assess activities of daily living after ACL reconstruction, also evaluates patient’s perception regarding their functional outcome. The aim of the study was achieved. We believe that a correlation with objective measurements is needed in order to obtain further conclusions.
