Distal radius fracture associated with bone fragility as a clinical manifestation of primary hyperparathyroidism: Case report
Keywords:
Radius fractures, hyperparathyroidism, primary, densitometry, osteoporosisAbstract
The management of distal radius fractures and their relationship to bone metabolism in general is evolving rapidly, making necessary the use of standardized measures to assess bone quality. A proper diagnosis of fragility fracture should be made in order to focus in an interdisciplinary management of these fractures to ensure an adequate clinical result. We present a woman who was diagnosed with a fragility fracture of her distal radius due to a primary hyperparathyroidism which in turn was secondary to a parathyroid nodular hyperplasia. She underwent an open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) of her distal radius, and a surgical removal of the parathyroid gland that corrected her bone metabolism and decreased her risk of future fragility-related fractures.
