Abstract

Introduction: Fingertip injuries are almost always related to work accidents and are a common pathology seen at emergency. Therefore an accurate knowledge about its epidemiology and prognosis is fundamental in public health planning policies.

Methods: A case series study was performed from January 2005 through June 2009 including all patients attended in hand surgery department at Clínica CES in Medellín, Colombia. 86 patients were included in the study. Age, gender, personality of the injuries, method of treatment as well as related complications were systematically evaluated.

Results: Overall complication rate was 10.5 %. 98 % of the patients fully recover themselves in a mean time of 30.2 days as all the patients where treated by a hand surgeon.

Discussion: Good to excellent results can be obtained when proper diagnosis and treatment is performed by a hand surgeon.
