Current concepts review. Actualization on femoroacetabular impingement

During the last century, many authors have suggested that hip arthritis is mainly related to shape morphology disturbances among it, rather than abnormal loads that could be applied to the hip. Femoroacetabular impingement was recently proposed as an explanation to hip arthritis etiology, especially in young non-dysplastic hips. Historically, there were some different pathologies involved in the onset of a young hip arthritis such as Legg-Calvé-Perthes disease, proximal femur fractures, slipped capital femoral disease, dysplastic hip, etc., but the prevalence of them as an etiologic cause of the disease, is relatively low when compared with young patients who developed hip arthritis. Nevertheless, clinical evidence shows that small changes in morphology, such as the ones produced by a femoroacetabular impingement, may also cause hip arthritis.
