Background: To evaluate the effectiveness of callostasis with monoplanar external fixator in patients with osteomyelitis.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted from January 2010 to July 2011. An ostectomy of the infected segment was performed with subsequent placement of external fixator to stimulate callostasis.
Results: There were 16 patients included in the cohort, with a mean age of 33.7 years; 87.5% were male; 4 femurs and 12 tibias were surgically treated. The consolidation was complete in 87.5% of patients.
Discussion: Callostasis and bone transport with monoplanar external Þ xator is an effective method to surgically resolve chronic osteomyelitis of long bones diaphysis
