Background: Epidemiological knowledge of congenital malformations composes a significant parameter in determining public health models. By keeping track of these pathologies, its incidence and prevalence, health systems are allowed to perform a proper comparison between different regions and a definition of different surgical behaviors among them.
Materials and methods: A retrospective study was conducted in a third level hospital of Quindío; All patients who were treated as outpatient in orthopedics service of the hospital were included in the cohort as well as those who underwent to surgery between 2007 and 2012.
Results: A total of 147 patients with congenital malformations ofthe upperlimb were identified, the average age was 13 years. It was found that replication was the most frequent congenital malformation of the upper limb 40.1%. It is observed that 23.8% of men were defective in replication, in women the most common congenital malformation was a failure in differentiation accomplishing 19.6% of the patients, this condition appeared to be more frequently on the left upper extremity.
Discussion: Globally duplication is reported as the most prevalent congenital malformation of upper limb. The early diagnosis of congenital malformations of upper limb throws tools in public health for early management of these anomalies.
Evidence level: IV.
