Hip and knee reconstruction surgery has evolved in many aspects within the last few years. Nevertheless, the incidence of peri-prosthetic joint infection (PJI) has also remained constant in this period, generating a serious problem, not only for the patient but also for the surgeon, with high economic and emotional costs. Due to this, the orthopaedic surgeon must have absolute clarity of the diagnosis and management of PJI. In the present review, a description is given of the different and available strategies for the diagnosis and management of hip and knee PJI.
